The Aquinnah Cultural Center is constantly expanding how we bring our cultural knowledge to our Wampanoag and island communities.
Some of the ways that we've facilitated cultural knowledge sharing are through delivering in-class cultural presentations at Island schools, disseminating crafting kits and instructional materials to Wampanoag tribal members, and collaborating with Sassafras Earth Education to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on Martha's Vineyard, and much, much more.
How We Engage with Our Communities
In The Classroom
The ACC works with local schools to provide special cultural presentations (life ways, transitional period, stories) or special tours of the Homestead with content accessible to the age/grade.
Through Art
The ACC hosts an annual Artisan Market on the third Saturday of July from 11am-4pm at the Circle. The Artisan Market is a well-established opportunity shop directly from Native artists and to learn about traditional arts through demonstrations and youth-accessible crafts. Highlights from previous years include hand drilling wampum, braiding sinew, making corn husk dolls, and more!
In recent years, we’ve also hosted a Virtual Artisan Market through Facebook, which takes place in November/December.
For Tribal Members
The ACC regularly hosts cultural nights for our tribal community. We also utilize Zoom to create space for Wampanoag tribal members to gather and share cultural knowledge and tribal history. This is one way that we ensure the continuation of generational wisdom.
